Veliky Novgorod, also known as Novgorod the Great is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia, with more than 1,000 years of history. For the first time Novgorod was mentioned in documents in 859. At its peak during the 14th century the city was the capital of Novgorod Republic and was one of the Europe's largest cities. The city lies along the Volkhov River just downstream from its outflow from Lake Ilmen. In 1992 Novgorod was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nowadays the city is known for the variety and age of its medieval monuments. Foremost among them is St. Sophia Cathedral, built between 1045 and 1050.
