1. Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). The oblast covers an area of 76,900 square kilometers, which is approximately equal to the entire area of the Benelux countries or Czech Republic.
2. During World War II, Gorky became the biggest provider of military equipment to the Eastern Front. Due to this, the Luftwaffe constantly bombed the city from the air. The majority of the German bombs fell in the area of the Gorky Automobile Plant. Although almost all the production sites of the plant were completely destroyed, the citizens of Gorky reconstructed the factory after 100 days.
3. Nizhny Novgorod (lower new city) colloquially shortened to Nizhny, known as Gorky between 1932 and 1990, is the administrative centre of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Nizhny Novgorod is the sixth-largest city in Russia.
4. The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin is a fortress in Nizhny Novgorod, the historic city center.
5. The famous Makaryev Fair took place every summer for more than two centuries outside of the walls of the monastery. This was one of the most famous and important merchant fairs in Eastern Europe. In 1816, a huge fire burned most of the buildings and millions of rubles were lost. The fair was then (in 1817) moved to Nizhny Novgorod, where it became even more famous.
6. Kitezh (Russian: Ки́теж) is a legendary and mythical city beneath the waters of Lake Svetloyar.
7. The Sokol aircraft building plant is an aircraft building company located in Nizhny Novgorod.
